Walking from Venezia Square to Via del Corso, we'll meet a majestic square: Piazza del Popolo. Maybe it's today the square more representative of the people of Rome. People's Square is located at the foot of Villa Borghese, a historic and extensive park in the Eternal City, and near the Via del Corso, the main street of the shopping.Piazza del Popolo is also served by the Rome Metro Line A (red) with the Flaminio stop. Metro Stops Flaminio and Spanish Steps (not far) are the two main metro stations serving the historic center of Rome.
Why is it called Popolo (Peaople) Square? The etymology of the name, as well as many other points of interest in Rome, is unclear. One of the most credible hypothesis is that the word "popolo" is refer to Poplar, on the basis of the tradition which says there was a forest of poplars in the vicinity of the square.From the architectural point of view, Piazza del Popolo is an excellent example of the stratification, with the presence in the same space of multiple architectural styles. It' s a phenomenon frequently present in a city rich of history such as Rome, reigned for a long time by Popes who have continually altered its face. For these reasons, in Piazza del Popolo there are three churches: the most important, the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo and the twin churches of Santa Maria in Montesanto and Santa Maria dei Miracoli.
From People Square strart Via del Babuino and Ripetta Street, two streets full of other shops made in Italy: antique shops located on the side of the big luxury brands. A real Disneyland for those who love to spend!
